The political atmosphere in the National Assembly took a new twist on Tuesday as Senator Kelvin Chukwu, representing Enugu East Senatorial District, formally resigned from the Labour Party (LP) and joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

y announced during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who welcomed the lawmaker into the APC fold.
In his letter of resignation, Senator Chukwu cited the breakdown of internal democracy and the disorganized state of affairs within the Labour Party as reasons for his decision to leave.
Reacting to the development, Senate President Akpabio congratulated the new APC member, emphasizing that Nigeria’s democracy will remain vibrant and inclusive. He noted that the country cannot become a one-party state, as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) continues to provide room for political diversity.
With Senator Chukwu’s defection, the numerical strength of the Senate now stands as follows: APC – 73 seats, PDP – 28, LP – 4, NNPP – 1, SDP – 1, and APGA – 2, bringing the total to 109 Senators.
