Igbo-Etiti Council Boss Commissions Ukehe Water Scheme, 17 Water Galleries
…Commends Gov. Mbah for His Support
the Chairman of Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State, Dr. Eric Ogbonna Odo, has officially commissioned the revitalised Greater Ukehe Water Scheme alongside 17 newly reticulated water pump galleries across communities in the area, marking a major stride toward ending decades of water scarcity in Igbo-Etiti.
The commissioning ceremony, held on Thursday at the water scheme site in Ukehe, had in attendance the Commissioner for Water Resources, Mr. Ben Collins Ndu Jr., and the Managing Director of the Enugu State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (EN-RUWASSA), Mrs. Chika Mbah, among other dignitaries.
In his address, Dr. Odo described the project as a fulfillment of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s campaign promises to the people of Igbo-Etiti East Development Centre in 2022. He emphasized that the revitalised water scheme will ensure steady and sustainable water supply not only to Ukehe but also to adjoining communities.
> “When I resumed office in September 2024, I made a solemn promise to end the long years of water scarcity in Igbo-Etiti,” Odo stated. “Today, we are witnessing the result of that commitment, and it is truly a dream come true for our people.”
According to him, the newly reticulated 17 pump galleries, spanning over 6 kilometres along the Old Federal Road, will make clean water easily accessible to residents, improving hygiene and the overall quality of life.
> “These water galleries are strategically located to ensure that no resident walks a long distance to fetch water. This is about making life easier for our people,” he explained. “Access to clean water is not a privilege—it is a right—and our administration is determined to make that a reality.”
Dr. Odo further assured that his administration remains committed to ensuring that every community in Igbo-Etiti has a functional water source. He noted that other ongoing and proposed water projects in the LGA would soon receive equal attention.
The project contractor, Dr. Chibuike Iyi, expressed satisfaction with the successful completion of the project, noting that only high-quality materials and modern technology were employed.
> “We ensured that this system is durable, efficient, and capable of serving the people for many years,” Iyi affirmed. “This project truly reflects the commitment of the council chairman to deliver sustainable infrastructure to his people.”
In his goodwill message, the Commissioner for Water Resources, Mr. Ben Collins Ndu Jr., lauded Governor Peter Mbah and Chairman Eric Odo for their vision and collaboration in delivering such an impactful project. He urged residents to safeguard the facilities against vandalism to ensure long-term functionality.
Similarly, the Managing Director of EN-RUWASSA, Mrs. Chika Mbah, charged the benefiting communities to take full ownership of the project by maintaining and protecting it for sustainability.
The highpoint of the event was the official commissioning of the 17 water galleries, strategically distributed across Ukehe. These include the Amauwani Gallery Point, Ekechara Market Gallery Point, Ugwu Ogbomogu Gallery Point, and fourteen others.
Meanwhile, jubilant residents of Ukehe and neighboring communities expressed deep appreciation to Governor Peter Mbah and Chairman Eric Odo, describing the project as “a long-awaited end to years of water scarcity”.
They thanked God for the vision and commitment of the state and local government leadership in fulfilling their promise of clean and accessible water for all.
